A Celebrancy Workshop for FIEC Wedding Celebrants
Few privileges in pastoral ministry compare with standing before a couple as they make their vows. Yet the celebrant's task carries real weight – legal, pastoral, and theological – and the ground has shifted in recent years.
This workshop is designed as ongoing professional development for pastors who solemnise marriages. We'll begin with the recent changes to the Marriage Act 1961, giving particular attention to the new 'real consent' requirements – including the compulsory separate meetings every celebrant must now hold with each party before the wedding. We'll sharpen our paperwork with a short refresher quiz on valid identity documents (you may be surprised what does and doesn't count). Then we'll move from compliance to conviction: a walk-through pre-marriage counselling, and how we help couples build a rich, biblical theology of complementarian marriage – one that displays Christ and his church, and prepares them for a lifetime together rather than merely a wedding day.
